Tourism Ireland teams up with Abbey Theatre to share ‘theatrical postcards’ with the world
Tourism Ireland has teamed up with the Abbey Theatre to showcase its new digital theatre experience, Dear Ireland – which brings together the voices of 50 writers and 50 actors in a collection of ‘theatrical postcards’ from the island of Ireland.
To highlight this digital theatre experience and to celebrate our wonderful theatre culture, Tourism Ireland is creating a series of three short films with some of the actors and writers involved in the Dear Ireland project – including Derry Girls stars Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney, as well as author, activist and teacher Sinéad Burke.
The second film in the series features Nicola Coughlan, who shares insights into a piece she performed, Your Hands, written by John O’Donovan. She also speaks about her love for Derry-Londonderry and her Galway roots. The film features spectacular scenery and some of our top attractions like the Ha’penny Bridge, the Spanish Arch, Eyre Square, Seamus Heaney HomePlace, the Peace Bridge, the Guildhall and the iconic Derry Girls mural.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to work with the Abbey Theatre and Nicola Coughlan to create this wonderful short film. It allows us to keep the beauty of the island of Ireland to the fore and to showcase our authentic home-grown talent around the world. While we may not be able to travel just now, this film will inspire people for their future visit – reminding viewers, including our ‘culturally curious’ audience, of our wonderful theatre culture, our stunning scenery and the sense of pride that makes the island of Ireland such a special place to visit.”
In the film, Nicola Coughlan praises the island of Ireland, saying: “People know me as a Derry girl but, in reality, I’m a Galway girl. I think Galway is great craic and I think it’s an incredibly artistic city too – it’s so colourful and so rich. Derry is such a friendly city, it’s really vibrant, it’s about the people there and it’s such a wonderful place to go and to visit. It’s quite mad to think now there’s a 30ft mural featuring my face. I think you come to Ireland and it’s such a small place but there’s so much to see and experience and do.”
The series of short films is being shared with Tourism Ireland’s fans and followers on its social platforms – including Facebook (almost 4.6 million fans worldwide), Instagram (804,000 followers), Twitter (530,000 followers) and YouTube. The first film in the series featured Sinéad Burke. To view Sinéad’s film, click here.
