YouTube Kids has announced the launch of its new series ‘Sherwood’. Sherwood, an animated series set in the dystopian future of 2270 and based on the mythology of Robin Hood, follows 14-year-old Robin and her friends’ battles with the wealthy Upper City in their efforts to overcome inequality and fight for justice.
The ten-episode series, previously available on YouTube Premium, will be free to watch on YouTube Kids and is created in collaboration with Irish company Giant animation, one of Europe’s leading animation production and development studios. Based in Dublin, the studio has earned a reputation for high-quality work across award-winning short films, commercials, and exciting TV shows for kids.
Speaking on the launch of Sherwood on YouTube Kids, Alex Sherwood, Animation Director and CEO, Giant animation said, ‘It was a privilege to work on such an ambitious project as Sherwood. The attention to detail throughout is phenomenal and the huge focus on performance led animation set against a dark, dystopian future has created a really unique vision. The series challenged our team of talented artists to push themselves to new heights, taking us on an exciting creative journey to bring the story of Sherwood to the screen. We’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished on this show and extremely excited for the worldwide audience of YouTube Kids to get inspired by Robin’s story.’
Sherwood is the latest animated series to be made available on the YouTube Kids platform which launched in November 2015. YouTube Kids was created to provide a safer environment for kids to explore their interests and curiosity on the platform while giving parents the tools to customize their experience. With tens of millions of weekly active viewers, YouTube Kids creates a unique experience that brings a rich library of content from all over the world to families while also giving kids the opportunity to explore their endless curiosities, learn about new topics, and be entertained.
In addition to Sherwood, there is also a wealth of helpful, educational and compelling content for young children to enjoy. Some of the key playlists available include:
Healthy Habits for You, which makes healthy habits approachable and fun. Highlights include videos around the importance of Washing your Hands and ‘Why we Need Sleep’.
LET’S GO LIVE with Maddie & Greg – Famed YouTube creators and TV presenters, Maddie Moate & Greg Foot have teamed up on a new series from their spare room for 30 minutes a day, to catch up on YouTube Kids, they cover science, nature, history, geography and more.
Also launching today is a special content category Fun@Home which will highlight fun activities kids can do at home during the current school closures, including Fun DIY/Indoor Activities; Do It Yourself arts and crafts, cooking/baking, science experiments and Be Active! which includes content to encourage kids to be active at home including dancing, yoga and exercising (PE with Joe Wicks).
